How to Order a Custom Front Door Online

How to Order a Custom Front Door Online

To order a custom front door online at Knockety, pick a door style, then set its size, swing, glass, finish, slab or prehung, and frame options in the configurator on the door’s page, and check out. The price updates as you choose. Knockety builds the door to your order in Houston, Texas, in about 4 weeks and delivers it free, curbside, anywhere in the continental U.S. in about 1 more week.

Before you start: measure your door, order finish samples to see colors in your own light, and preview a door on a photo of your house.

Step 1: Choose your door style and material

Knockety builds front doors in two materials:

  • Wood: solid mahogany or knotty alder, from $1,274. Shop wood front doors.
  • Fiberglass: FiberCraft Premium or FiberCraft Pro, with a wood-grain texture and stained-wood finishes, from $910. Most fiberglass models are impact rated; a design rep will confirm yours. Shop fiberglass front doors.

Prices are as of October 2026, for a 32 x 80 inch slab with no finish. Need a door sooner? Quick Ship doors are already built with fixed options and arrive in about 1 week.

Step 2: Choose your size

Most Knockety doors come 32 or 36 inches wide and 80 inches (6'8") or 96 inches (8') tall. The 1, 4, 6 and 8 Lite Narrow Profile fiberglass doors also come 30 inches wide, and five styles come 42 inches wide: the 1, 2 and 4 Block Narrow Profile, the Knotty Alder Solid Square 2 Panel and the Solid 6 Panel Mahogany. The size menu on each door page lists the sizes that door comes in. Knockety does not build other sizes. Measure your existing door before you order: our guide shows how to measure for a custom front door. Fit is the buyer’s responsibility, so a design rep can check your measurements by phone, photo or FaceTime.

Step 3: Choose the swing, as seen from outside

Stand outside your house, facing the door. If the hinges are on the left, it is a left-hand door; if they are on the right, it is a right-hand door. Then choose whether it swings into the house (in-swing) or out (out-swing). Each door page offers left-hand in-swing, left-hand out-swing, right-hand in-swing and right-hand out-swing.

Step 4: Choose your glass

Wood doors come with clear, water, rain or Flemish glass. Fiberglass doors add reeds and cloud. Glass is included at no extra cost, and glass doors use double-pane glass. For the most privacy, choose cloud (frosted) or rain (textured) glass. Some styles are solid, with no glass.

Step 5: Choose your finish

Order the door unfinished, or add a factory finish for $600, applied in our Houston finishing section before the glass goes in. To see a color on real wood or fiberglass first, order a finish sample.

Step 6: Choose slab or prehung

A slab is the door alone. A prehung door comes hung in its frame with jambs, sill, hinges and weatherstripping, ready to install. Most people need a prehung door: the most common expensive mistake is buying a slab and expecting it to arrive ready to install. Choose a slab only if you are hanging the door in an existing frame yourself. Prehanging adds to the price; for example, $950 on the Multi Lite SDL Mahogany Door and $1,295 on the Solid 6 Panel Fiberglass Door (October 2026).

Step 7: Choose the jamb, trim and hardware prep

  • Jamb: 4 9/16 inch, or 6 5/8 inch for thicker walls (+$125).
  • Brickmould: exterior trim around the frame (+$95).
  • Hinges: black, satin nickel or oil-rubbed bronze, at no extra cost.
  • Sill: aluminum or bronze, at no extra cost.
  • Bore holes: have the door drilled for your handle (+$50), with a single or double bore and a 2 3/8 inch or 2 3/4 inch backset. Need a handle? See handle and lock sets.

What happens after you order

Custom doors are built to order by our team in Houston. Wood doors go to millwork, where the slab is laid up, cut to size and machined for bore holes and cutouts; fiberglass doors are trimmed and machined on a CNC, where the fiberglass skins are applied. Then the finish is applied, the glass is installed and sealed, and prehung doors get their jambs, sill, weatherstripping, hinges and hardware.

Custom-built doors take about 5 weeks: 4 weeks to build in Houston, then about 1 week in delivery. Quick Ship doors, hardware and samples arrive in about 1 week. You can change or cancel your order until your door goes into production, so contact us as early as possible.

Delivery

Delivery is free, curbside, by freight truck with a liftgate, anywhere in the continental U.S. Carriers vary by destination. You move the door from the curb to your entry; doors usually weigh 100 pounds or more, so plan for two people. In the Greater Houston area, delivery and installation are free. You can also see Knockety doors at our Houston showroom.

Returns and damage

You have 30 days from receipt to request a return or exchange. There is no restocking fee, and the customer pays return shipping. Inspect your door before installing it: an installed door counts as accepted. If your door arrives damaged, report it within 30 days with your order number. Details: shipping and returns.

Double doors, sidelites and transoms

These are quoted by a design rep rather than ordered online. Request a quote for double doors or sidelites and transoms.

Common Questions

Ordering a Custom Front Door: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I design my own front door online?

Yes. On each Knockety door page you choose the size, swing, glass, finish, slab or prehung, jamb, brickmould, hinge color, sill, bore holes and backset, and the price updates as you go. Knockety builds from these fixed options, not from a drawing or photo, but can match an existing door if it fits Knockety sizes and styles.

How long does a custom front door take?

Custom-built doors take about 5 weeks: 4 weeks to build in Houston, then about 1 week in delivery. Quick Ship doors, hardware and samples arrive in about 1 week.

How much does a custom front door cost at Knockety?

As of October 2026, fiberglass doors start at $910 and wood doors at $1,274, as a 32 x 80 inch slab with no finish. Prehanging, a factory finish ($600) and other options add to that. Glass is included at no extra cost, and delivery in the continental U.S. is free.

Should I order a slab or a prehung door?

Most people need a prehung door. A prehung door comes hung in its frame with jambs, sill, hinges and weatherstripping, ready to install. Choose a slab only if you are hanging the door in an existing frame yourself.

Can I see a finish or preview a door on my house before I order?

Yes. You can order real finish samples, which arrive in about 1 week, and you can upload a photo of your entry to preview a Knockety door on your house for free.

Can I return a custom front door?

You have 30 days from receipt to request a return or exchange. There is no restocking fee, and the customer pays return shipping. Inspect the door before installing it, because an installed door counts as accepted.
