How to Decorate Your Front Door This Holiday Season

Dec 8th 2024

One of the greatest joys of the holiday season is strolling neighborhoods in the brisk weather, marveling at the festive lights and designs your neighbors adorned their homes with. No matter the holiday you celebrate, this time of year is the perfect opportunity to decorate your home and share your spirit.

Our last piece covered the essentials of a home’s entryway - keeping it safe, durable and weather-proof. However, today we will be discussing the fun part - decoration! Specifically, decorating your door for the holidays.

Wreaths

The front door is the centerpiece of your home’s exterior and sets the tone for your entryway. Wreaths are staple holiday decor for a reason - they’re classic and simple but offer so much creative opportunity. Traditional evergreen wreaths are made of pine, fir, or cedar branches. Some classic additions include red bows, pinecones, and berries. Timeless and elegant.

You can also further design your wreath with more personal touches. Some of our favorite additions include:

  • Candy canes
  • Ornaments
  • Ribbons & mini gift boxes,
  • Jingle bells
  • Faux snow powder or flakes (to create a frosty effect)

The Pioneer Woman provides an extensive list of DIY wreath projects that you can take inspiration from, as well.

Whether you lean toward traditional charm or modern, your wreath’s design can see the tone for the rest of your holiday decor.

Decorative Framing

An often-overlooked opportunity to decorate your door is the framing around your door. Similar to a wreath, you can incorporate natural elements around the border of your door by draping garland, eucalyptus, magnolia leaves, or ivy for a fresh and minimalist look.

If you’re already using a natural wreath as your door’s centerpiece, adding lighting can be a very complimentary addition. Twinkle lights surrounding the door are an obvious choice, but these same lights can also be used to create holiday-themed lights on your door like Christmas trees or snowflakes. More ‘clunky’’ additions, such as lanterns with LED candles on either side of the door offer a ‘woodsy’ or cabin-like feel.

Incorporating light on your door creates a welcoming presentation to your entrance and will also highlight any other existing decoration.

Door Wrapping

If you really want your front door to ‘pop’, door wrapping will do the job for sure. Your home is a gift, so why not wrap it like one? Companies like Lofaris have so many fun and playful holiday-themed vinyl door wraps. If you like the idea of presenting your door or home as a gift but want to avoid completely wrapping over it, wrapping a large bow over it is fun and festive.

If you plan on wrapping your door or adhering a bow or other decorations to it, please make sure you’re not using adhesive that will peel the coating from your door.

Signage and Ornaments

Stores like HomeGoods and Hobby lobby have tons of fun holiday-themed signs that are easily hung over your doorknob or command strip hooks. If you want to get more customized with a sign, decorating your own can be a really fun and creative family project that gets everybody involved.

If there is an overhang or awning above your door, hanging ornaments in front and above your door is also a fun choice. Using a light, transparent fishing line, you can make ornaments appear as if they’re suspending mid-air right in front of your door. If you decide to do this, we recommend using inexpensive and non-centimental ornaments in case your area is hit with high winds or other severe weather conditions.

Door Surroundings

Possibly just as important as the door decorations themselves are the decorations in front and surrounding your door. For decorating in front of your door, themed doormats are a go-to for their ease and impact. Just as with signage, Homegoods and Hobby Lobby have a massive selection of doormats (realistically, they have just about every Christmas decoration you’ll ever need). To accessorize the sides of your door, you can throw in some accent baskets filled with greenery or pinecones. Or, really make your home feel secure with some large nutcrackers guards on either side of your entrance!
